“Crave” by Paramore

Paramore’s “Crave” has a nostalgic quality to it. But as explained by Hayley Williams, what it actually speaks to is relishing the moment – so much so that while in it, a person is concurrently fearing its conclusion.

Perhaps we can say that thesis sentiment is along the lines of being a kid in an amusement park. On one hand, you’re very much relishing the moment. But in the back of your mind you’re also thinking like damn, eventually your mom is going to say that it’s time to go home. And no matter how late she may do so, you’re having so much fun that it would still be too early nonetheless.

That said, the lyrics do appear to take creative liberties as far references to time are concerned. On one hand they read nostalgic but on the other, as if they’re very much based in the present. The former element has something to do with Hayley romanticizing an earlier, freer stage in Paramore’s history.

So putting all of that together, we can conclude by postulating that what it is the vocalist more specifically favors are days that make her feel most alive. In the past that would entail ‘making her cry’. But now, as sort of implied, it would involve something different though unspecified.

So I crave, crave
To do it again, all again
Crave, crave
To do it again, I
Just for a second, it all felt simple
I’m already missing it
