“C’est Comme Ca” by Paramore

The title of this song (“C’est Comme Ca”) is in French. In English, it translates directly to the phrase “it’s like that”. And its sentimental basis, as expounded on by Hayley Williams, revolves around the songstress being the type of person who is uncomfortable with comfort. Or put otherwise, she and the rest of the Paramore gang, after disbanding for a spell and doing their own respective things, are now experiencing an unprecedented level of stability. But Hayley comes off as if that too much calmness irritates her, especially if she is unable to perceive where her life is headed.

That sentiment does come through, somewhat, during the second half of the lyrics. Or more specifically based on the featured narrative the vocalist, having now noticeably aged, is living a wiser, more-sober life which, by the looks of things, is reaping palpable results accordingly.

However, to her “getting better is boring”. Or another way of understanding Hayley’s disposition is that she may be personally developing alright, but the cost of that effort is her life now being less action-packed than it was prior. She’d rather be out getting involved in some type of drama – a temperament that the vocalist is well aware “hinders… progression” but to her is more fulfilling nonetheless.

So another way of looking at all of this is as if Williams has now come to the point where she must solidly choose between the temporary or permanent, i.e. instant gratification versus long-term development.

And it does appear that she decides to behave more like an adult than a child, so to speak, as tedious as such may be when compared to her established lifestyle.

“C’est Comme Ca”

Going back to the title, it has been put forth that said expression is the French equivalent of “que sera, sera”. So with that in mind, the thesis sentiment would then be along the lines of the vocalist, as challenging as it may be for her personally, coming to the realization that you can’t defeat father time. So it’s better that she ages gracefully than trying to maintain her raucous norm.
