“Culling Voices” by Tool

Culling, particularly in terms of how it is used in the title of this Tool song (“Culling Voices”), is the process of weeding out and eliminating unfavorable elements from a particular setting. And in this instance, that setting would the narrator’s own mind. And the “voices” which he desires to do away with are actually his own negative, imaginary thoughts. These thoughts obviously are having a demoralizing and overall detrimental effect on his wellbeing. Owing to this, he wants to get rid of them as quickly as possible.

Indeed he goes as far as to state that he is suffering from mental illness. And this aliment revolves around the aforementioned “misleading” thought processes.

So conclusively, we can see that the singer is actually in a battle against his own self. He recognizes the need to ‘cull’ the bad voices which are playing in his head.  Yet simultaneously, it does not appear that eliminating them will be a simple task. So in response, he has made the decision to confront these ideas. His way of tackling them apparently is centered on a conscientious effort to, for the most part, ignore them.

At first I skipped past this track. Going through a divorce and just kind of lost the last couple of years. Once I started listening to the lyrics, it resonated with me. Great song on this album. Another example of how music can be therapeutic and inspiring.

The song is about being telepathic. Hearing other’s thoughts. Judging him, condemning him, with no evidence…
Or schizophrenic, whichever you believe in.

As usual, as I have always said, the so called “meaning” in 🔧 lyrics is subject to ones own interpretation. It will mean something different to every individual. (Just kidding I was losing my mind one night and spit this out during a fever dream.) Do Scientology and stay away from evil inoculations.

I have severe trauma related to my own blood relatives deceiving me, sending me to prison over something I allegedly did but have no recollection of doing.. and then after 4 years to prison kidnapping me because I was blowing the whistle on their ass.. and it’s still a whole lot more to the story but this song is the most important song on the whole album to me because I don’t trust anyone and I don’t think I ever will and just to know that I’m not alone that song tells me I’m not alone thank you to all the members of tool I feel like Maynard is speaking directly to me

As I have always said the lyrics in Tool are subject to one’s own interpretation. My “understanding” of them will not be the same as yours. As yours will not be the same as someone elses. (I’m just kidding I was having a fever dream one night and woke up with that in my head). – Do Scientology and stay away from evil inoculations.
