“First of the Year” by Cuco
Obviously “the first of the year”, as referenced in this song, is not meant to point to an actual calendar date. Instead, what it alludes to is this feeling of euphoria the vocalist is experiencing due to being with the addressee. The addressee is of course the woman he loves.
Even though the lyrics are a bit ambiguous, the implication is sorta like it is only now that he’s getting the chance to love her fully – and vice versa.
Or another way of looking at it, judging by the conclusion of song’s only verse for instance, is that these “first of the year” experiences, i.e. days in which he is refreshingly reminded of the genuine romance between himself and the addressee, are a semi-recurring thing for Cuco.
Or regardless of how us respective listeners may interpret the intricacies of what’s being put forth, what is clear is that this is a love song.
All things considered, perhaps the titular allegory is an unconventional or even somewhat-confusing one in context. But it is apparent that the vocalist genuinely cares for and has an emotional dependency on the addressee. And when such emotions are in full force, like they are presently and mutually between him and the addressee, it edifies his existence, which is the reality he is celebrating in song.

Who is Cuco?
To begin with, Cuco is a Californian singer. Fresh out of high school, he self-released a couple of EPs before eventually being signed by Interscope Records in 2019. It was also Interscope who put out his first studio album, “Para Mi”, that very year.
Said LP includes a collaboration with Jean Carter titled “Bossa No Sé”. The song in question achieved RIAA-gold status in 2021. “Bossa No Sé” appears to be the only single Cuco has dropped to date which has been certified.
