Meaning of “Hydrocodone” by Cuco

Succinctly put, “Hydrocodone” is heartbreak song by Cuco. In fact you can even say his suffering is severe not only due to the title of the track but also, while analyzing the lyrics of the song, it is apparent that he is has to deal with self-esteem issues due to most likely being dumped.

From the song, it can be deduced that he feels that he “was not good enough” for his ex. He also dealt with emotional abuse at her hands, on top of having to deal with the fact that, while his wounds are still fresh, she has likely moved on to another man. As such, this track finds the artist “sitting in (his) room”, all by himself and doing nothing but deeply missing his woman every blessed day. All he desires most is to hear her say “baby I love you”. But finally it seems his “hopes are gone”.

But what really is the meaning of the word “hydrocodone”?

The title of this track, “Hydrocodone”, is actually a drug used to relieve severe pain. Cuco deciding to name the track after this drug is due to the tale featured therein being based on real-life heartbreak he experienced while recovering from a serious car accident which required Cuco to get surgery.  Or as he puts it, he actually finished the track while on this drug “post surgery”. And that must have been doubly-painful on the singer, not having the woman he loved around at such a dire time, with such a strong sentiment of disappointment actually being relayed in the song. However, it is important to mention that the track itself does not seem to actually reference the aforementioned car accident.

“Hydrocodone” was written and produced by Cuco himself. It was released on 2 April 2019.
