“Forever Only” by Jaehyun
Jaehyun’s “Forever Only” is an interesting love song, because it’s never actually revealed if the addressee is a real person or not. That is to say that chorus implies that she is and furthermore would be akin to the vocalist’s ex. But the verses give a different impression, that she is more along the lines of being a figment of the vocalist’s imagination – “a passing illusion” as Jaehyun puts it – as in a personification of the type of romantic partner he idealizes.
Indeed the singer even goes as far as to ask this figure ‘where she’s been his whole life’. This definitely doesn’t sound like the type of thing you’d say to someone that you’ve already been in a relationship with.
But all lyrics considered, well, at least the bulk of them, including the bridge, do point to the idea of the addressee being Jaehyun’s ex. And with that in mind, once you cut underneath all of the poetic fluff, what “Forever Only” actually reads like, at least as translated into English, is your standard heartbreak song, i.e. a singer in his feelings due to his significant other no longer being in his life.
So under that estimation, what the verses would further symbolize is his desire to reunite with her. But as illustrated, as it currently stands that prospect – for whatever unstated reason – does not appear as an actual possibility.

Jaehyun is a member of NCT, one of the more successful K-pop acts of the day, as well as having firmly established an acting career for himself. He is on record as having headlined one of the band’s songs back in that day, that being 2017’s “Try Again”, though that outing was a collaboration. So “Forever Only”, which SM Entertainment put out on 18 August 2022, is his first straight-up solo track. And this song is featured on a wider project known as NCT Lab.
