Meaning of “Friends” by Michael W. Smith

“Friends” is a song written and performed by multiple Grammy Award-winning American musician Michael W. Smith. The lyrics of this emotional track are about having to part ways with a dear friend. It originated as a tribute to a church companion of the songwriters who was moving out of the neighborhood they all resided in together. However, it is up to the listeners to decide who they’ll apply the lyrics to. In other words, as Smith himself stated, this song can be used for a multitude of purposes, such as memorializing the dead.

Lyrics of "Friends"

The song begins with the singer insinuating that it is the will of God that his friend is no longer around. However, despite no longer being able to interact with this companion directly, the singer as well as the others they left behind, still feel their presence. Indeed their friendship is forever and as such will not be severed through lack of direct communication. Furthermore, their love for each other is based on a mutual affection for God and the fact that their emotional interdependency empowers them.

The song ends on the note that that not even a lifetime is long enough to live as friends.

Smith performs “Friends” at President George H.W. Bush’s Funeral

Smith performed this song at the State funeral of the late 41st American President George H.W. Bush. Smith and President Bush were very close friends. Their relationship was so strong that President Bush personally asked him to play this particular song during his funeral service. Smith of course obliged and performed the song live at that memorial service which took place at the Washington National Cathedral on December 5, 2018.

Great article… And that’s one of the few songs that he and Debbie actually wrote together. And it was written really quick too. But despite that, the life and meaning in the song is palpable enough that everyone at one point or another finds it relevant for themselves.
Definitely my all time favourite song.
    P. S. I hope there could be more articles like this on his songs. Thanks

Michael, this song is so hard for me to listen to but I do anyway. I heard it again today on Ernie Hasse’s program. My dear and precious Wife, Diane, of 53 years went home to Heaven August 11, 2021 and I miss her more than words can say. If you see this or anyone, please, when you Pray, Pray for me! Thank you, God’s Blessings to all.
