“Giants” by True Damage

True Damage’s “Giants” was released as part of the “League of Legends” franchise, specifically during their championship tournament. “League of Legends” is a massive, multi-player videogame that is popular and even played professionally all over the world. And accordingly, whereas the majority of the lyrics of this song are recited in English, there are also some parts in Spanish and Korean.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for True Damage's Giants at Lyrics.org.

And as for its theme, although there are some elements of the song which are based on the game, for the most part “Giants” reads like your average hip-hop braggadocio track. And why? Simply because the singers themselves are the titular “giants”. And this designation alludes to them being superior to their competitors. These rivals can be interpreted as gamers they are competing against, or they can be viewed as adversaries, haters or doubters in general. Or put differently, if a listener doesn’t know beforehand that this song is based on the videogame, there isn’t necessarily anything stated within the lyrics which will make them privy to such. Rather this presentation is based on the overall theme of bigging up one’s self, using colorful metaphors in the process.

Who are True Damage?

True Damage is actually a computer-animated music group made up of avatars/characters from the popular “League of Legends” videogame series.

But True Damage is voiced by real-life professional musicians, four from America and one from South Korea. The American artists are rappers Thutmose and Duckwrth, joined by singers Keke Palmer and Becky G. And their band mate is South Korean songstress Soyeon.

In fact this is not the first time that League of Legends used such an animated group to celebrate its professional tournament. You see Riot Games released this song on 10 November 2019, the same day of the 2019 League of Legends World Championship finals. And they did similarly last year with a group called K/DA which Soyeon also participated in voicing the same character, “Akali”, that she does for True Damage.

And just like with K/DA, True Damage is also proving to be quite popular. For instance the group’s music video attracted one-and-a-half million views on YouTube within seven hours of its release.

And accordingly Riot Games has made “skins”, i.e. the outfits which the characters wear on the music video, available for virtual purchase by gamers.  In other words players of “League of Legends” can buy the clothing, using real money, to be worn by their avatars within the game.

Who wrote “Giants”?

The lyrics to “Giants” were written by Duckwrth, Thutmose, another American vocalist by the name of Harlœ and videogame-music composer Kole Hicks.

And the track was produced by the League of Legends alongside the Riot Games Music Team, with Riot Games being the creators of the game.
