“Good Luck” by Basement Jaxx (ft. Lisa Kekaula)

The simplest way of premising what’s going down here is by proceeding based on the assumption that the vocalist is addressing her ex, though it may be generally arguable that such is not necessarily the case. And what has apparently happened is that he dumped her or ‘sold her down the river’, as put in the second verse, which is a general way of saying that he did her dirty somehow.

Additionally it would appear, based on the bridge, that the addressee may have even physically abused her. And it seems he is able to rationalize such behavior based on possessing a haughty attitude.

So on top of celebrating no longer being involved with this individual, there’s also a few other things that Lisa wants him to know. And at the center of her disses, if you will, is the assertion that the addressee is not as great as he believes himself to be, thus bursting his bubble of conceit. Or stated otherwise, his downfall is inevitable.

So under this belief the vocalist is sarcastically wishing him ‘good luck in his new bed’ – with “new bed” possibly being an allusion to the relationship he moved on to after her – even though once again she is confident that karma, so to speak, will expeditiously catch up with him.

The “Kish Kash” Album

The British duo Basement Jaxx released the dance-pop song Good luck in January 2004. The song featured vocals from Bellray’s band member, Lisa Kekaula. Good luck is the second single on Basement Jaxx’s third studio album, Kish Kash.

XL Records and Astrawerks Records released Kish Kask on October 20, 2003. The Duo and Meshell Ndegeocello produced the whole album. The duo has stated that they made the album with a conscious sober state of mind. Thus, they avoided alcohol, cigarettes and stayed away from clubs during the period they were making the album. Again, they were focused more on songwriting and developing their original style and less reliant on old jams and sampling.

The album was recorded in a new studio they got in Brixton. They have also stated that they learned how to do studio work better during this studio’s recording.

Kish Kash peaked at the seventeenth position on the UK Albums Chart (OCC). It ranked second and fifth on Billboard’s Top Dance Albums chart and Heatseekers Albums chart. Again, it ranked on the Billboard 200 chart.

At the 2005 Grammy Awards, it was honored with the Grammy Award for Best Dance Album. It was also nominated in 2004 for the Mercury Prize award.
