“Hello Sunshine” by Bruce Springsteen

The premise of this song is the singer’s affection for the open, free road. In other words, he likes traveling in solitude but in the process has become “a little too fond of the blues” which is associated with this particular lifestyle. So in recognition of the fact that he has developed an affinity for depression, he is now imploring the “sunshine” to establish a permanent presence in his life. Thus within the context of this song, “sunshine” is symbolic of – for lack of a better word – happiness.

And the insinuation is that he is not going to necessarily forsake his wayfaring lifestyle in order to achieve this goal. Or put differently, Springsteen appears to have every intention to remain on the road. But what he does seem to be asking for is a modification in his outlook, as he wants to trade his “heartbreak”, “pain” and ‘loneliness’ for a healthy dose of “sunshine”.
