“Honestly” by Ulrikke

“Honestly” was inspired by Ulrikke’s relationship with Christoffer Gunnestad. Besides co-writing this song, Gunnestad is the songstress’s business manager and also, as fate would have it, her bestie. A couple of years back, their friendship was on the verge of dissolving as a result of unfortunate circumstances, such as the COVID-19 pandemic screwing up the music industry and the concurrent passing of Christoffer’s dad from cancer.

That is to say that how the two parties respectively opted to handle such issues was not for the best. But ultimately, Ulrikke decided that their association was one worthy fighting, thus the backstory behind this track.

As inferred in the lyrics, what more specifically went down between the vocalist and addressee is the latter bottling up their pain and fear to the point the former couldn’t properly perceive and respond to it.  Or put otherwise, Christoffer was under the impression that Ulrikke didn’t really care, and that disposition went on to negatively affect their relationship.

So Ulrikke is letting him know, in a generally-applicable way, that nothing can be further from the truth. Or as “honestly” relayed, she’s actually “terrified” that something can come between them that would destroy the friendship they share. And that’s because she views this relationship as being essential to her existence.

But all of that said, this narrative is presented in sort of an implicitly-romantic context, and it reads as if the addressee did proceed to break up with the vocalist. So Ulrikke is also “honestly” putting forth that she never foresaw the day that there would be “nothing left” of their relationship.

“Honestly I, I’m terrified
‘Cause if there’s nothing left of you and me
There’s nothing left of me
You said this love would never die
But now there’s nothing left and honestly
You said we’d always be”
