“(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” by Elton John & Taron Egerton

As the title suggests, this is a song based on self-love. More specifically it seems to center on an era in the life of the subject of the song – which is the iconic musician Elton John – and how the internal challenges experienced therein. So in the first verse, we find Sir John reminiscing on days gone past.  And the story he is relaying is one in which he learned to trust the “voice inside (his) head” in terms of choosing his life’s path.

Taron Egerton comes in

Meanwhile Taron Egerton (in the role of Elton John) also recalls these past days as being “somehow bittersweet”. Overall his sentiment seems tantamount to one of appreciation for making it out of that particular era with his soul still intact.

When you consider the artists singular verses in conjunction with their joint chorus, what this track appears to ultimately boil down to is that during the juncture in Elton John’s life which they are singing about, he went through some sort of identity crisis, one that left him with lingering self-esteem issues. However, he has made a conscientious effort to overcome the past and indeed anything which may hinder him in the name of achieving freedom. And more importantly, he is now reclaiming the self-love which he apparently lost as a result of that trying period.
