“I’m Yer Dad” by GRLwood

GRLwood’s “I’m Yer Dad” is a song meant to be a comedic look at popular notions concerning ideological masculinity. Or stated otherwise, the singer doesn’t harp on her relationship with the man at the center of the tune, i.e. her “dad”. Rather her focus is more on the ways he behaves. And these behaviors are depicted as being overly one-sided. So for example, if a man actually behaved as the character presented in this song, than he would have a hard time being anyone’s “dad”.

Verse 1

For instance, in the first verse, he lets it be known that he has a strong affinity for “sports” and obscenity. In other words, he likes chillin’ in his “man cave”, an area of the house which is his private domain. And said room was “made for sports”. Meanwhile, he enjoys the sight of promiscuous women and “sports” simultaneously. In fact he even wants this women ‘in all his sports’. This may be an allusion to the types of scantily-clad dancers which have now reached the level of infamy at some sporting events. But either way that’s what dad wants, to be fed while he enjoys doing what he loves.

Verse 2

Then in the next verse, we are enlightened to the fact that he also likes receiving a kind of bedroom act in his “fast car”. In fact he goes on to say that he enjoys full-fledged bedroom fun in his automobile. And in the midst of expressing such, dad gives a shoutout to NASCAR, which is a popular race car league in the United States.

Bridge

Then in the bridge, we find him proclaiming that the he has a “really big” “man part”. So even if we were to take it that the singer’s father enjoys working girls and sports and doesn’t mind letting her know so, it would still be highly unlikely that such an anatomical reality is something he would make his daughter aware of.

Conclusion

So again, more than anything this song reads like a mocking of toxic masculinity. Yes, maybe Rej Forester and/or Karen Ledford’s dad really does display some of the characteristics mentioned in the lyrics. But at the end of the day, they aren’t lamenting the fact their fathers are so. They are rather mocking them for putting such a high premium on bedroom fun, sports, cars and chillin’.

I love that this song brings awareness to this kind of behavior, but I still think that it’s absolutely disgraceful that children listen to this. There are words such as “di*k” and “f–k” in this video, and while I have known most of these words since 5th or 6th grade, I still think it’s horrible that children are learning such words through a song like this, and associating this absolutely disgusting masculinity with things such as bedrooms, a place for comfort, which for us teens, is a necessity for life, not just for sleeping, but also a sanctuary where we can express ourselves with fear of someone scoffing at you or brushing you off.

They could also associate this song with cars, a mode of transportation, it sometimes is shown for pride, as you know, many people take pride in clean or expensive cars. It’s also a place where you can sing to songs on the radio without bothering the people around you. The fact that children listen to this song, wonder why GRLWood is screaming, and therefore look up the lyrics and potentially the meaning of the song only to find that it’s about toxic, masculine, one-sided SEX, a word I learned at the age of seven through a near-rape experience. I can’t believe that this is still in the world! If this kind of thing didn’t exist, we would probably already be finding solutions to really dangerous world problems, such as oceans rising, the extinction rate of 65%, climate change, pollution, overpopulation, and other things.

I don’t know if you’ll make it this far, congrats if you did.

Having a song talk about sensitive topics is bad because? What about those who find comfort in the song because they can understand and relate to this song. If you don’t want to hear about these kinds of things ~dont listen to songs like this~ and let those who like this song enjoy it. Of course, this stuff is still going to be in the world. People are creeps. So saying “If this kind of thing didn’t exist, we would probably already be finding solutions to really dangerous world problems, such as oceans rising, the extinction rate of 65%, climate change, pollution, overpopulation, and other things.” is so pointless because these things will ALWAYS exist. Don’t get so upset over a GOOD song and the fact that kids may relate to this because I definitely do.
