While the singer recalls all his good memories with friends and loved ones, he stresses that none of these feelings can compare to what he has for his lover. The song ends with the singer revealing that he may not be able to let go of the past and all the people he once held dear, yet his greatest love will be for this lover whom he plans to share the rest of his life with. The lover could literally be a reference to his partner, or could be a reference to his music which has become a big part of his life.

John Lennon speaking about this song revealed that this was the first song which really consciously captured his personal life.
