“Jesus Forgive Me, I Am a Thot” by JPEGMAFIA

Despite having an overtly-religious theme, for the most part “Jesus Forgive Me, I Am a Thot” reads like any other pop rap. That is to say that it primarily features the artist bragging about his lifestyle, with a particular emphasis on violence. However, JPEGMAFIA is unique in his own way. So as can be derived from the title, this song features a strong humorous undertone, also.

For instance “a thot” is a derogatory word commonly used to describe promiscuous females. However, it can also be applied to a man under certain circumstances, though again with a generally-negative connotation. And in this particular case, what Peggy seems to be alluding to is somewhat of his nasty feminine side, with the artist also referring to himself “a diva”. And what ultimately seems to be the point of all of this is Jpeg touting himself as being classier than his peers.

But at the same time he’s “no punk”. And perhaps the one subject this track sticks to most faithfully is JPEGMAFIA coming off as somewhat of a street thug, as in someone whom opps test at their own risk.

While “Jesus” himself is never actually mentioned in the song, what that reference actually points to is once again the religious motif of this track. That does not mean that it is actually about a religious topic, because it’s not. Rather the verses open with JPEGMAFIA telling the addresses to “pray for” certain things. And what he advises them to pray for varies, from personal well-being to the prevention of mass shooting to showing sympathy on phony dudes.

Overall what this is all supposed to boil down to, as illustrated in the chorus, is JPEGMAFIA being appreciative of his blessings. Indeed given the track’s outro, “Jesus Forgive Me, I Am a Thot” may even be classified as a praise song, albeit from an unorthodox viewpoint.  In other words, despite apparently being convinced of his superiority, JPEGMAFIA is taking nothing for granted. And even though he may relay the sentiment via braggadocio comedic symbolism, at the end of the day he is thankful to a higher power for his success.

But at the same time, there is no indication of JPEGMAFIA actually asking to be forgiven for anything, as suggested by the title. In fact to the contrary he seems to be quite comfortable with being “a thot” and launching scathing, potentially beef-sparking insults at his haters.
