“Jupiter 4” by Sharon Van Etten

“Jupiter 4” is one of those types of songs that centers on that feeling of celebrating being smitten based on the premise that love took a long time coming. And even though there may be an artistic metaphor here or there, there really isn’t anything complicated about what’s being put forth.

The singer is in love. And the reason she is additionally celebratory is because she’s been ‘waiting her whole life for someone like’ the addressee. Or as put alternatively in the chorus, this is the first time in her life that she has experienced ‘real love’.

But that said, what “Jupiter 4” is largely known for is sounding “like a funeral dirge”. And the way the music video director Katherine Dieckmann explained her approach to its clip sounds a bit melancholic also. That may have something to do with the title, which isn’t related to the lyrics or astronomical bodies even but is rather a shoutout to a semi-popular late 1970s’ music synthesizer known as the Roland Jupiter-4.

But the stated reason as to why the tune sounds dreary, according to Van Etten, was due to another feeling associated with being in love, which is knowing that one party will pass away.

Sharon Van Etten

Sharon Van Etten is a singer from New Jersey, United States. She managed to come out with five studio albums within a decade’s time, between 2009 and 2019. Her best performing thus far has been 2014’s “Are We There”, which broke the top 30 of both the Billboard 200 and UK Albums Chart.

“Jupiter 4”

“Jupiter 4” came out as a single from Sharon’s album, “Remind Me Tomorrow”, on 27 November 2018. The whole “Remind Me Tomorrow” project was released via the record label, Jagjaguwar.

Sharon, whose musical history apparently dates back to her high school years, wrote this song. She was 37 years old when “Jupiter 4” was dropped.

The producer of this track is John Congleton.

Apparently this song didn’t chart despite its sheer quality. Perhaps that could have a lot to do with the fact that Sharon is more of an underground artist. But to note, “Remind Me Tomorrow” itself was ranked one of ‘the top albums of 2019’ by a plethora of entertainment-based media organizations, such as Consequence of Sound, Rolling Stone and Stereogum.

The music video to this track was spearheaded by multi-faceted director Katherine Dieckmann.  And to note, in 2016 Sharon Van scored a film Dieckmann directed entitled Strange Weather.
