“Lifetime” by Ben&Ben

“Lifetime” was directly inspired by a story which one of Ben&Ben’s fans shared with them over social media. What happened was that this lady was in love with her male bestie from high school. Yet she never let her feelings be known to him. So fast forward some eight years later, and she is attending his wedding to another lady. Then finally she lets him know that, ‘hey, I totally had a crush on you back in the day’. And lo and behold, he also turns around and says he felt the same way about her. So she walked away from the experience, in her own words, ‘shocked and slightly angry towards the world’. And the lesson she learned, which she wanted to share with others, was that if you find yourself in a similar situation it is better to do something. And this something is to “express how you really feel so that in the end you won’t regret anything”.

Narrator is in a similar Situation

So the narrator himself comes off as a similar character. He refers to the addressee, i.e. the woman he loves, as “a good dream”. And the reason he addresses her in such a manner is because ultimately all he can do is fantasize about being with her as opposed to actually having her. And whereas the lyrics aren’t as detailed as the narrative presented above, considering the third verse especially, it does read as if he may have lost her due to his own hesitancy.

So now that she is in fact moving with someone else, his “secrets”, as in the feeling he has kept inside, have now “turned into regrets”.

Title (“Lifetime”)

Meanwhile the title of the track mainly alludes to the idea that he has concluded that if he was in fact bold enough to make his move, the two of them may have indeed spent a “lifetime” together.

“Was there a lifetime waiting for us
In a world where I was yours?”

Love isn’t love until we give it away. Meant to be shared. It’s charity, a gift from God. The hard part is to let go and live it but so possible!
