“Light of Christmas” by TobyMac & Owl City
Christmas is a holiday which can mean a lot of different things depending on who you’re talking to. In fact based on these lyrics, a listener could tell that even to the vocalist(s) himself, there are various aspects of the holiday season that he enjoys.
But when he refers to the “Light of Christmas”, that is what TobyMac and Owl City perceive as the ideology behind the entire festive occasion. And what said ideology boils down to in practice, as stated in the pre-chorus, is “all the good that (they) do for the people that don’t have it so good”.
So as stated, they are looking forward to hanging out with friends and the snow and other such pleasures that tend to characterize this season. But more than anything they tend to use the occasion, most simply put, to do charity.
To note, both Owl City and TobyMac are Christian artists. So to them, Christmas is likely to conjure up thoughts of Jesus Christ, the main figure upon which the holiday is based on. And of course it was Jesus who, according to Paul, coined the adage ‘it’s better to give than to receive’. So it would be such an understanding that is undoubtedly compelling the vocalist to take such a stance in this song.
So as for the likes of the artists at hand, they are not compelled to harp on the well-known material aspect of celebrating Christmas. Rather it’s the free things, like enjoying time with loved ones and the prime opportunity to engage in some self-sacrificing goodwill, that they are biggin’ up in terms of the holiday season.
Release of “Light of Christmas”
This track was written for a holiday episode of a Christian-based animated series known as VeggieTales. Said episode, which aired on 22 October 2013, the same release date as this song, is titled “Merry Larry and the True Light of Christmas”.
Owl City is, in essence, one musician by the name of Adam Young who, like TobyMac, is from the United States and specializes in contemporary Christian music. These two acts did drop a previous track together, in 2011, titled the “First Noel”. Also, “Light of Christmas” serves as the title track to a holiday album that TobyMac came out with in 2017.
Who wrote this song?
Adam Young (Owl City) and TobyMac composed this song with another songwriter who goes by the name Matthew Thiessen.
I think you’re missing the whole point of the song. The love of God is what makes them want to help others. You entirely left this part out and only alluded to the fact that they are Christians and are probably thinking about that too.
“Do you hear the sound?
A thousand angels are singing out
To God Almighty we’re bowing down
And that’s what Christmas is all about”
