“21 Years” by TobyMac

The “21 years” which makes up the title of this track points to the age of TobyMac’s son, Truett McKeehan, when he passed away in 2019. At the time of his passing, the news of his untimely death caught the world by surprise.  And this song isn’t so much a tribute from a father to a deceased son as it is an exposition of the emotional turmoil Toby went through as a result.

He also apparently questions God in terms of asking why Truett had to go so soon. And in the choruses and bridge he addressee his son directly, inquiring of him about his enjoyment of the afterlife.

Indeed TobyMac is in fact confident that his son is now “in heaven”. And he also believes that when he too passes away, they will meet again in paradise.  But for now he is definitely in his feelings, which has manifested in the rapper being compelled to drop a personal song in remembrance of his firstborn son.
