Meaning of “After Dark” by Mr. Kitty

The term “after dark”, as generally understood, points to the adult time of night, when the kids are asleep, and the likes of lovemaking goes down. Relatedly, even though some of the wording, especially earlier on, is arguably confusingly-poetic, as the track progresses it isn’t difficult to ascertain that this is a love song.

More specifically, the lyrics reveal that the vocalist is looking forward to making out with, i.e. kissing, the addressee. And considering the title, it may be that Mr. Kitty is also hoping that the two of them will proceed to have sexual intercourse.

But as far as the first verse and first half of the chorus goes, it seems that he’s implying that his relationship with the addressee has been a troubled one, with the pair now being on the verge of making up. And that would theoretically be why Kitty is so excited, i.e. now reuniting with his significant other.

That said, perhaps it should be noted out that the lyrics do imply that the featured romance is homosexual in nature. That is to say that there is a single line in the second verse whereas Kitty goes about referring to the addressee using a masculine pronoun. And apparently that is his actual inclination, which may explain the singer’s unconventional stage name.

“As the hours pass
I will let you know
That I need to ask
Before I’m alone
How it feels to rest
On your patient lips
To eternal bliss
I’m so glad to know
As the hours pass
I will let you know
That I need to ask
Before I’m alone
How it feels to rest
On your patient lips
To eternal bliss
I’m so glad to know
As the hours pass
I will let you know
That I need to ask
Before I’m alone
How it feels to rest
On your patient lips
To eternal bliss
I’m so glad to know
As the hours pass
I will let you know
That I need to ask
Before I’m alone
How it feels to rest
On your patient lips
To eternal bliss
I’m so glad to know”

    It’s absolutely clear to me that the song is about a vampire and it’s familiar. 100%. First of all the name of the song is “After Dark” which might be a reference to the song by Tito & Tarantula – included in the OST for From Dusk till Dawn, a vampire movie. But also a reference to the fact that vampires can only function during the night hours. Let’s proceed;

We can tell that Mr.Kitty is excited and amazed to see his Master:
    “I see you
    You see me
    How pleasant
    This feeling”

And he’s willing to give his blood to the Creature of Shadows, but he’s also striving to give even more:
    “I’ve given
    What I have
    I showed you
    I’m growing”

    And, finally, the verse:
    “How it feels to rest
    On your patient lips
    To eternal bliss
    I’m so glad to know”

It’s know that familiars are not only fanatically devoted to their fanged masters, but also take pleasure from the process of giving their blood to them. In several works of art it has been mentioned that the “vampire kiss” causes infinite pleasure to the victim, though the loss of blood in itself is harmful to the body. It’s a romantic and extreme experience that strengthens the bond between a master and a servant, thus Mr.Kitty refers to it as “eternal bliss” of resting “on your patient lips”.

The fact that Mr.Kitty has never written an even remotely as good song as “After Dark” confirms my theory. His Master/Mistress has probably either taken such a liking to it that they’ve made Mr.Kitty a vampire, or maybe otherwise — saw this song as too revealing and abandoned their servant, severing him from the source of his greatest inspiration.
