“Time” by Free Nationals, Mac Miller & Kali Uchis

In this song Mac Miller and Kali Uchis play the role of two lovers in a challenging romance.  And “time” has been recognized as the primary issue in their relationship.

From Kali’s perspective, she needs “time to grow” as an individual, with the implication being that doing so would be at the cost of their relationship. However, she is very much in love and suffers without her boo. Thus she is not overly-enthused at the prospect of terminating the romance. But at the end of the day, the union has its issues, as in Uchis not being satisfied with the way it is progressing.

Meanwhile Mac has also identified “time to grow” as something beneficial – yet more from a group perspective.  He feels they need to develop together. Or put differently, he also understands that he needs to mature as an individual. Yet he does not want to sacrifice his relationship with Kali in the name of doing so.

Thus the song ends where it began, with its primary singer, Kali Uchis, more or less lamenting the fact that she needs time to herself while simultaneously being in love with someone she cannot part ways with.

Facts about “Time”

This is the first track which the late Mac Miller (1992-2018) has been officially featured on since passing away. However, Spotify did release of couple of posthumous tracks Miller did in their studio in November of 2018, as well as Mac’s unreleased song “Benji the Dog” leaking online in May of 2019.

Empire Records and Obe Records released “Time” on 12 June 2019.  As of its release it is not featured on any album but is slated to be part of Free Nationals’ forthcoming project, which is expected to come out later in 2019.

The verse which Mac Miller drops on this song was recorded in May of 2018, a few months before his death.

In late October 2018, a concert entitled “Celebration of Life” dedicated to Mac Miller was held at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.  And Free Nationals were the house band at that event.

Mac Miller and Kali Uchis wrote “Time”, while Free Nationals produced it.
