Meaning of “Alien Blues” by Vundabar
There have been some colorful explanations offered concerning the meaning of the lyrics of “Alien Blues”, as made possible by their ambiguity. But as implied by Vundabar frontman Brandon Hagen, he would be the titular “alien”.
The reason the vocalist is using such a term to describe himself, as musicians often do, is to point to the notion of not fitting with the mainstream world. And these sentiments harp back to Hagen’s youth whereas, most simply put, he appears to have been an outcast.
And with that premise in mind, the second verse of the song especially becomes a lot more clearer and understandable. As for the first, it sorta reads as if, in context, the vocalist is trying to kick it to a particular lady. But being the awkward fellow or “alien” that he is, it’s as if Brandon’s words simply don’t come out right.
“Na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh”
