Meaning of “Burn the House Down” by AJR

“Burn the House Down” is meant to speak to the political power of AJR’s generation. As explained by Ryan Met, in this day and age, “regular people have so much power”. And the rest of his explanation goes on to imply that what he’s referring to is how now individuals actually have a voice via access to public channels, including those of the social media variety.

So as implied in the first couple of verses, that fact has the vocalist experiencing some type of intrinsic dilemma. In other words, does he join “the fight” for what he perceives as a better world, or does he just continue going about his own personal business?

As inferred, this is a predicament that the listener also faces, especially, let’s say, younger folk such as AJR. Indeed, as implied, it is being in the early stages of adulthood that’s also making the vocalist think like this. In other words, he’s now maturing and becoming concerned about the world around him instead of focusing solely on selfish matters.

Furthermore he’s also insecure, believing that his contribution to the cause, in the form of a song, would ultimately be rejected.

The third verse also goes on to imply that this frustration is not only of the political variety but also having to do with AJR’s experiences in the music industry. As insinuated, they have to deal with their fair share of grimy people along the way and up until the present were tolerant of that reality. But now, the singer is on the verge of speaking out in that regard also.

So the title of the song points to the idea of attacking the system. All things considered, this would not be a physical attack but one in which, in ‘burning the whole house down’, protestors fearlessly confront the powers that be with the goal of changing the system.

And by the time all is said and done, taking the bridge into consideration for instance, that’s the message behind this song. The lyrics don’t direct the listener to the cause he or she should be fighting for or against. Instead, they reflect the disposition of someone who has grown so fed up with certain realities surrounding his life that now he’s on the verge of taking palpable action and is indirectly advising the audience likewise.

“Way up way up we go
Been up and down that road
Way up way up, oh no
We gon’ burn the whole house down
Watch me stand in the line
You’re only serving lies
You’ve got something to hide
We gon’ burn the whole house down
We gon’ burn the whole house down”
