Meaning of “It’s A Wrap” by Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey’s “It’s A Wrap” is an interesting narrative in that the sentimental aspect of it does a good job of implying that the addressee is a serial cheat, even though such is never actually specified. That is to say that on this particular morning when all of this is taking place, Mariah has decided to give her live-in lover the unapologetic boot.

Well actually, she does apologize to the addressee in the second verse, for putting him under the impression that she was the type to tolerate his unfaithful ways. For now, upon mistaking her acquiescence for compliance, he has dug himself into a hole he cannot get out of, i.e. being unceremoniously sacked and dumped.

What has pushed the vocalist over the edge is facing “yet another early morning” whereas her lover just “walk(s) like it’s nothing”. As explained by Carey, what she’s alluding to is him being out all night and not returning home until the next morning. And as evidence as he was in fact doing something he wasn’t supposed to in the process, the vocalist cites that she called him numerous times, without any response, throughout.

So these lyrics represent Mariah reaching the breaking point. The primary sentiment being relayed isn’t one of hurt or heartbreak but rather anger. Therefore, it behooves her now-ex to remove his belongings from what appears to be Carey’s property as expeditiously as possible. Or else, she’s threatening to really blow a fuse by becoming so irate that the neighbors would become alarmed.

“’Cause when it’s gone, it’s gone
It’s gone, it’s gone
You’re dead wrong, so wrong
So wrong, so wrong
So just scoo-do-do-do-do
Scoo-do-do-do-do
Baby, it’s a wrap
Shoo-do-do-do-do
Shoo-do-do-do-do
For you, baby
It’s a wrap
It’s a wrap for you, boy
It’s a wrap
Aww, baby
Ooh-we, ooh-ooh
E-ooh-ooh”
