Personally, I have yet to fully connect with Ez Mil’s style, but his contribution to hip hop is undeniable. He brings a unique sound to the game while showcasing his versatility and impressive lyricism. I see this as a very refreshing contrast to the prevalent ‘mumble rap’ trend.

While Ez Mil’s music may not entirely align with my personal taste, his impact on Eminem and the broader hip hop genre is very significant. My hope is that someday he manages to create a buzz that can drive the genre in a more positive direction.

That being said let us delve into the lyrics of “Realest”.

The “Realest”

In slang usage, particularly within the context of hip hop culture, a “realest” can be defined as someone who is authentic, genuine, and true to themselves. This person doesn’t put on a front or pretend to be something they’re not. They’re honest, straightforward, and often prioritize loyalty and integrity.

They may also be considered “real” for keeping true to their roots or not selling out their values, despite any fame or success they might achieve.

This is exactly who Em and Ez claim to be in this song.

It should be noted that in 2023, EZ Mil joined the exclusive ranks of a few artists (including 50 Cent) privileged enough to be co-signed by both Em’s Shady Records and Dre’s Aftermath.

“I’m the realest in the business and everybody gon’ be envious of my beginnings
Got a circus for the sinners with bodies, so stop tryna be another addition”

Eminem’s Verse on “Realest”

On his verse, Eminem reflects on his career and his position in the hip-hop world. In doing so, he also addresses criticisms and comparisons that have been made against him throughout his journey in the music industry.

Hip Hop & Race

Eminem recognizes his success in hip hop but confronts the racial narrative that places him at a specific rank in the industry. While many suggest he’s only in the top five rappers because he’s white, Eminem argues that his race has also held him back, suggesting he’s not considered number one due to his whiteness.

“My skin color’s still working against me (What) ’cause second I should be to none
Being white ain’t why they put me at five (Nope) it’s why they can’t put me at one (Whoot)”

Later on in the verse, Em acknowledges his controversial position in hip hop, a predominantly Black art form, saying that despite being a guest in the hip hop house, he turned the house into a “mansion”. Put simply, his significant contribution to the hip hop industry has taken the whole industry to great heights.

According to him, thanks to him, hip hop has expanded to “England, Germany, France and Japan”. He has even expanded it all the way to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

“Made it gargantuan England Germany
France and Japan’s in this bitch
Even Dubai because my music they do buy”

The Gen Z Diss

Eminem lashes out at the younger generation who critique his style, suggesting they’re too young to understand real hip hop. In dissing this generation, Em controversially tells them to stop criticizing him and rather stick to what they know how to do best which is “school shootings”.

Respect for Old School

Em also pays homage to the pioneers of hip hop, like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. He also touches upon Melle Mel’s decline due to steroids.
