Meaning of “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)” by Ylvis

“The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)”, in sort of a roundabout way, serves as an ode to the fox. Everyone seems to know what a fox is, i.e. how the animal looks, even if you never saw one in person. But Ylvis begs the question of what sound does it make?

And truthfully, many listeners would be stumped in that regard because unlike most of the animals mentioned in this song – i.e. ducks, frogs and cows and what have you – we aren’t as familiar with the cry of a fox (as alluded to in the bridge).

In the chorus the vocalist does go about imitating the sounds that foxes emit, but it may be that he’s doing so purely in jest.

In the second verse and pre-chorus, Ylvis goes about describing the physical characteristics of foxes. But how much the vocalist knows or actually cares about these animals, if any, is unknown. More to the point is the intention of this song to mock the EDM genre that has grown so popular in Europe.

And apparently upon creating this song, Bård Ylvisåke and Vegard, the two comedic siblings that make up Ylvis, never expected this tune to blow up like it did. But the video in particular went viral, and just like that they had a bona fide international hit on their hands.

“What does the fox say?
‘Jacha-chacha-chacha-chow!
Chacha-chacha-chacha-chow!
Chacha-chacha-chacha-chow!’”
