Meaning of “Would I Lie to You?” by Eurythmics

To begin with, I must say that “Would I Lie to You?” is without a doubt one of my favorite tracks from Eurythmics. The way the horns and guitar vibe together is sheer brilliance. Not to mention how the backup vocals harmonize with Annie Lennox’s soulful cries—just brilliant!

The truth is I’ve always thought that Annie never really got the credit she deserved as a vocalist. Man, what a voice! She was blessed with a range that set her miles apart from many of peers.

Lyrically, it is safe to say “Would I Lie To You?” centers on Annie confronting her lover who has been unfaithful to her and treated her badly. While doing this, she is simultaneously leaving him.

The above was confirmed in the track’s official video. The actor who plays Annie’s cheating boyfriend is Steven Bauer.

What is the meaning of “Would I Lie to You?”

When Annie asks the addressee, “Would I lie to you?”, it serves two purposes. First of all, it is a challenge to the partner. Secondly, it is sort of a reaffirmation of her own honesty and integrity. Owing to this, we can refer to this as one that is much about personal liberation as it is about questioning another’s truthfulness.

NOTE:

This song reminds me of Aretha Franklin’s iconic track, “Respect“.

Also, I personally think that it was this song that advertised Annie’s powerful voice to the world for the first time.

Would I Lie To you?

Did Annie Lennox write “Would I Lie to You?”

Yes, she did. Annie co-wrote this song with David A. Stewart (the other half of Eurythmics). Contrary to popular belief, this song wasn’t inspired by the demise of her relationship with Stewart.

Release Date

This was the first single to be released from “Be Yourself Tonight”, which is Eurythmics’ fourth studio album. It was released officially on April 8th, 1985.

“Would I Lie to You?” met with global success as soon as it was released. For example, it went straight to number 1 in Australia. In the United States, it hit the 5th position on the Hot 100. It was also a top-20 hit in the United Kingdom.
