“Minute to Myself” by Tori Kelly

In “Minute to Myself”, Tori Kelly seems to be addressing a lover who may be termed by some as being clingy. That is this person is depicted as being so close to the narrator that he even moves her hair when it’s in her eyes.  Moreover he is so infatuated, if you will, that even when she behaves unruly it doesn’t affect him. And she does in fact appreciate this person. However, his perpetual presence is obviously having a negative effect on her sense of independence. Thus the title of this song is based on the songstress requesting a ‘minute to herself’.

And she makes it clear, logically in light of this individual indeed being the emotionally-dependent type, that her request for some time does not mean she loves him any less or that she doesn’t appreciate his efforts. Rather it would actually be beneficial, from her perspective, to their relationship if she were allowed to solve minor issues on her own. Or put in a different way, she does not need 24/7 support. And more to the point, these two lovers are not given the opportunity to actually miss each other with the dude constantly being by her side.
