Mumford & Sons’ “Beloved” Lyrics Meaning

“Beloved” is a song based on Mumford & Sons’ lead singer Marcus Mumford’s personal experience of witnessing his grandmother pass away. That sad incident had a permanent and profound impact on his outlook of life. As such, he has dedicated this track to all people going through similar sentiments of losing someone that they have cared for. And in a broader sense Marcus wants listeners to derive whatever meaning they feel appropriate from this song. For instance, the track also serves as a reminder of man’s undeniable mortality. In other words, going through that harrowing experience made Mumford realize that ultimately we have but only so much control over our fates, which is an additional idea presented through this song.

Conclusively the singer has come to grips with the fact that what is happening is a natural occurrence which he cannot prevent. However, this realization does not curtail the overall sadness which is implied through the lyrics and imagery associated with “Beloved”.

With only hours or days left with mom in this life, I kissed her cheek and said “I love you” before leaving her memory care facility for the night. Sitting in my car, I heard a voice whisper “listen”. A song came on my coffee house radio station. It was “Beloved”, the acoustic version. I sat there frozen and kept hitting repeat for fear of the beautiful moment ending. Was God acknowledging mom’s final moments and my grief/peace? Thank you for this beautiful song and its timely delivery.
