“My Own Version of You” by Bob Dylan

Anyone familiar with the works of Bob Dylan, especially at this stage in his life, know that his songs can be filled with enough allegories and symbolisms that even dissecting the lyrics to a single track can fill a small book. However in terms of the actual title and main theme of “My Own Version of You”, the singer is fantasizing about taking certain aspects of particular individuals he idolizes and combining them into one single being.  The purpose of doing so would be in the name of creating his “own version” of a particular person.

Now who the titular “you” is exactly is not specified. However, it is pretty clear that such would be a male. Owing to this, it is clear Bob isn’t fantasizing about putting together the perfect romantic interest. Indeed the most-plausible theory put forth is that he is actually referring to concocting a more-idealized version of himself.
