“Open My Mouth” by Kiiara

 “Open My Mouth” is a song is based on a relationship the narrator (Kiiara) is in. And from all angles, it seems to be a tumultuous one, as in there regularly being ‘fights’ involved. So in response Kiiara has decided not to “open (her) mouth”. And why is she taking this line of action? Because she is convinced that opening her mouth will only make matters worse, as in her words would depress the person she is addressing.

Kiiara, who co-wrote “Open My Mouth”, has stated that this song, being “art”, “is open for interpretation”. And for her personally, she interprets the track not as being based on an interpersonal relationship but rather the one she has with herself. And this relationship has been highlighted by “mental health issues” she has had to deal with her “entire life”, where she had ‘felt silenced, alone and afraid’.

So with that understanding in mind, this song would not read as if she is curbing her tongue for the sake of being emotionally sensitive to a friend, lover or other kind of associate. Rather, since she has “felt silenced”, in a roundabout way she is instead encouraging herself to speak up despite knowing that doing so will garner an unfavorable response. Indeed Kiiara has also stated that the intended purpose of this track is to “encourage others to let their guard down” and “speak (their) truth”. So even though, on the surface, the implication is that the singer is going to make a conscientious effort to control her words, apparently such is not actually the case, at least not from Kiiara’s perspective.

Release Date of “Open My Mouth”

Atlantic Records in conjunction with Effess Records released “Open My Mouth” as a standalone single on 7 June 2019. However, this track is expected to be featured on a forthcoming Kiiara album, which will be her first.

The music video to this song features yet-to-be-released clothing by celebrity-fashion designer Christian Cowan, who also makes an appearance on the piece.
