“Say Yes To Heaven” by Lana Del Rey

It has been reported that the recording of Lana Del Rey’s “Say Yes To Heaven” dates back almost a decade, to November of 2013, before it was eventually released officially on 19 May 2023.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Lana Del Rey's Say Yes To Heaven at Lyrics.org.

The original intent was reportedly for it to be featured on “Ultraviolence”, Del Rey’s 2014 studio album. But of course it failed to make the cut.

In between then and now various snippets and versions of the song were leaked, with said leakages commencing circa 2016. And the tune grew popular on TikTok and, once again according to reports, may have been thus far subject to “over 100 mixes”.

As such, this track is serving as Del Rey’s first single since those associated with her LP “Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd”, which just dropped a couple of months earlier and performed particularly well across the pond.

The Lyrics of “Say Yes To Heaven”

This piece is not religious in nature, as may be assumed by its title but rather, as far as said title/chorus goes, is poetically based on the vocalist apparently likening her love to “heaven”.

The addressee is the apple of her eye. So in regards to that comparison, what she is saying is that if he chooses to be with her, she will give him “heaven”, which we will take as, in context, a metaphor pointing to the gratifying fullness of her love.

This seduction, if you will, is not premised on the vocalist’s attraction to the addressee but also the latter seeming to be reluctant in terms of giving himself to her.

Furthermore, as depicted in the first verse, the addressee is inferred as someone who has grown accustomed to depression, which would be another reason why he is not jumping on the offer before him.

And on that note, it should be pointed out that certain aspects of this song can be easily interpreted as being romantic in nature, but all lyrics considered this piece does have a very-general applicability.  That is to say that the vocalist may be personifying a concept like carefreeness and is inviting what can be interpreted as a shy or timid addressee to embrace, thus edifying his or her life in the process.

But it is that particular aspect of the narrative, i.e. the vocalist’s repeated want of the addressee, which is making us assume this piece is romantic in nature. In other words, that approach is what makes “Say Yes to Heaven” read like a love song more than anything else, i.e. the narrator being mindful of and attracted to the person she’s singing to.

“Say yes to Heaven
Say yes to me”

Another Rick Nowels/Lana Del Rey Collaboration

This song was produced and co-written by Rick Nowels, who was a regular collaborator of Del Rey during the 2010s. And the other co-writer of “Say Yes to Heaven” is the songstress herself.
