Shinedown’s “Planet Zero” Lyrics Meaning

The writers of “Planet Zero”, Shinedown’s Eric Bass and Brent Smith, have offered plenty of backdrop behind its meaning, since it is the title track to an album. But as far as the lyrics go, what the vocalist is most noticeably speaking to is cancel culture. In other words, people like to idealize themselves as a generally-unified front – that is until someone in the fold disagrees with the prevailing ideology. Then, as revealed in the second verse, said individual runs the risk of being ostracized.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Shinedown's Planet Zero at Lyrics.org.

This entire piece was inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic and how, as implied by Smith in his own words, certain media outlets proceeded to cap concerning the matter at hand. So imaginatively reading in between the lines, it can be said that the vocalist is akin to an anti-vaxxer.

The prevailing debate concerning the pandemic has been whether or not to get vaccinated, with the mainstream media espousing the latter. So when the vocalist sings about alluding to being cast aside for not following the herd, then it is theoretically possible that he is referring to someone who for example refuses to get vaccinated despite the massive external pressure.

And yes, if a prominent figure for instance comes off as anti-vax, then he or she should be looking forward to cancellation in one form or another.

Title (“Planet Zero”)

Then concerning the title of the song, Eric Bass went on to further explain that believing one stance or the other, as provided by the media, should not be something that causes beef between us. And that’s because, well the term “Planet Zero” points to, in part, the idea that we don’t have any place to go but Earth. Therefore it would be more beneficial if we treated each other productively as opposed to hating based on something you read on social media.

Then Bass offered a more specific explanation as to what the word “zero” means in context. And in that regard, without beating around the bush let’s just say that he feels the masses are stupid and hardheaded. Or going back to the example of the vaccine debate, it’s like nobody these days is really considerate of the other side’s feelings or argument. And even then, when one side or other proves correct, it’s like there’s no accountability to those who were at fault.

Takeaway

Really, you’re not likely to get all of the above simply from the lyrics of the song “Planet Zero” (though the album will likely expound on these ideas). But it is obvious, taking the chorus into the consideration, that the vocalist has a lot on his mind.

We can conclude by saying that the main talking point of this song is cancel culture. However, there is also an expressed and related concern as to where we, as a race you can say, are headed. But here, the existential threat, if you will, is not presented as climate change or a meteor or anything like that. This threat is rather the harrowing prevalence of intolerance.

For someone (author of this article) that says the threat is intolerance, you sure are intolerant of anyone who takes a stance against vaccines. You said in your article that any prominent figure that takes this stance should expect to get “canceled” and THAT is intolerance at its finest. Hypocrite.

    • Anonymous says:

The author isn’t being a hypocrite, they are just telling the truth. People get cancelled for saying it. The author isn;t saying that it should happen, just that it does

To Anonymous from feb 21: That’s what make’s me wondering about the lyrics too, but I actually don’t know which side Shinedown’s members are on. I think it would be smart to take this song and start being more tolerant and constructive with other opinions again.

  4. Anonymous says:

It’s ironic that this song is about tolerating others points of view, and the author labels them “akin to an anti-vaxxer”. When it just means freedom of expression. Then they say anybody who comes off as anti vax should be canceled. So by that definition anybody with a different opinion should be canceled. You are literally the problem in this song lol

    • Sam09 says:

It’s because antivaxers get a ton of heat for stating their opinions on the topic, by the masses. That’s just one part of cancel culture.

    • Oreo says:

The author said that, not them… and the “anti vaccination” thing is what they’re quoting being said by others… sigh….

  5. grow up you dumb mfs. says:

anti vaxxers are stupid as hell op. dont listen to them, they’ll be too busy dying of curable diseases. good riddance! lol i knew this song was bogus the moment i heard it. thanks for the explanation.

    • Sam09 says:

So you’re here, why? They still prevail , even with hateful nobody trolls on here. Lol

    • Oreo says:

Song points out the problem with intolerance and you take it personal… Then follow by doing exactly that.. Thanks for the entertainment.. Bahahahahahaha!!!!

    • Lewis says:

      how tolerant….The irony…

They are mentioning one particular vaccine as opposed to vaccines across the board. That’s not the same as being anti vax. But right now that seems to be what people are being led to think. Being critical of one means completely against all of them and then going to cancel everyone based on the strawman they built to tear down.

    • nunya says:

The use of the term “anti- vaxx” is purposefully malicious. Most people lumped into this category have no issues with vaccines in general, the issue is the government forcing you to get the jab. Let the medical evidence speak for itself and let each person make their own decision. People aren’t against the vaccine, they are just against being forced into a one size fits all solution that has been proven to be quite ineffective. lumping everyone into a category and then using that to accuse them of stupidity is ridiculously childish and ineffective.

See you can just go f yourself all the way! You have no compassion so if something happens to you, good riddance!

People commenting about intolerance need to to a little bit of reading up on the concept of tolerance of intolerance and the dangers therein. Summary: intolerance of intolerance is not, in fact, hypocrisy, but the ultimate state of tolerance.

at least we all can agree that we like shinedown, haha!

  8. Shan Ban says:

It’s very well written, sung and the music is fantastic! Thank you Shinedown for never disappointing me. I’ve been a fan for 20 years!

Perhaps anto-vaxers should be considerate of other peoples desire to not be exposed and possibly die from or lose someone to a highly contagious possibly fatal disease. My life outweighs your feelings. If you thought someone could potentially have ebola would you want to be around them? I think not. You would avoid them like they have the plague which in a way they might.

    • Think for yourself. says:

As a Covid ICU nurse since day one of the pandemic and one that refuses the jab (not against others being vaccinated mind you) I love this song. If you will look at the numbers by researching the topic in depth with an open mind you will find just the opposite. It’s the vaccinated that are spreading the last several strains of the disease more than the unvaccinated. This was in fact confirmed by the CDC during the omicron outbreak. Think for yourself and beware of the government. Btw I’ve been a critical care RN for 28 years.

      • Anonymous says:

        You’re a f***ing idiot then

      • Bruh Moment says:

Not sure where they asked about the numbers? I think it was just a “hey, don’t be an ass to me if I want to be vaccinated” because it’s on BOTH sides. My aunt is also a nurse and she spouts crazy conspiracy theories constantly (attack on the capital was done by liberals *disguised* as Trump-supporters, for example). So that doesn’t really make you immediately credible. Like fuck don’t get the shot. Whatever. But don’t cry when people don’t want to be around you because of it. Your choice = not getting the vacc. Their choice = not being around you.

      • bruh says:

People are allowed to not want to be around you just like you are allowed to not get the vax. And being a nurse doesn’t immediately make you credible. My aunt is a nurse and spouts conspiracies all the time. She also got an abortion and currently witch-hunts anyone who supports them online because she’s a hypocrite. Don’t get it, that’s your choice. But I don’t think buddy here asked about your job or the “numbers.” We’re allowed to not want to be around you. Get over it.

  11. Covid ain’t S—T’ says:

I am an anti-vac person. I have had Covid just as many times as my friends that were vaccinated that had Covid. The worst my Covid got was a sore throat for two days. It’s our choice our bodies. I also didn’t get the polio vaccine. Where is polio???
    Gone just like Covid.
    On to Russia now!!!
What he what our government is doing to us!

  12. Someone who likes good music. says:

^ Dumb, ignorant redneck. Seems about right for fans of shinedown honestly

    • disappointed says:

Definitely agree, even if I like their music. I felt off when I started to understand what planet zero meant-

    • disappointed says:

Even though I like their music and ig I’m a fan of shinedown I 100% agree that they’re dumb at honestly. I liked planet zero until I stared understanding the lyrics. And it sucks because the song actually sounds good.

      • Lewis says:

Why? it doesn’t give an opinion on what side they are on. they literally just said more tolerance and less cancelling for opinions? Why are you so authoritarian?

  13. Lewis says:

Solid song, lets hope they tackle some more good topics like this. we really need the backup these days.

    To anonymous from 2/23/22
Shinedown claims to be a band that agrees with opinions from both sides, and also disagrees, and with this song they’ve actually communicated that, the song could be taken from the perspective of an anti vaxxer, which would be an ironic take from a pov of someone on the left, or can be taken from the perspective of a victimized person on the right, making comments on cancel culture and following herds. I find that it’s coming from the right side of the isle with this song though, they reference cancelation, following herds, and the lyrics “all hail power to the people” is more of a right wing statement, however, “except you, you don’t check the box we like” could also be another reference to cancel culture.
Another thing, this might be far stretched but I feel it’s worth mentioning, the lyric, “on to better days or so they say” could be a subtle nod to Donald Trump not getting re-elected and biden coming in, considering this is a new song and “better days” can be the loss of trump and bringing in of biden, but the “so they say” could be referencing the current state of the country.

  15. Beaner / Cincinnati says:

Shinedown keep doing what you do …..all your songs talk the reality of life

  16. A concerned citizen says:

I think we have lost the whole meaning it’s not about one thing it’s about everything. It’s about that we are losing our freedom to have an opinion on anything. It’s about the elite and their corporate greed and them using the algorithms on social media to divide us. Whether it’s your opinion on black lives matter or covid vaccinations or what is really happening in Ukraine. The song is about this world’s state and the WEF controlling all the countries laws and freedoms. My opinion is its Shinedowns attempt to say “wake the fuck up people.”

  17. Anonymous says:

I’m from Ukraine, and the first time I heard this song, I was shocked! For me, it was literally about what is happening in my country, about war. I know, it’s not possible, because the song was written long before everything started. But every word just felt like it describes everything without any hidden content. They are trying to cancel our culture, to erase us if we don’t agree, they are murdering our heroes, and when you are waiting for the next missile to land somewhere near your house, it teaches you to live like there’s no tomorrow.
So the point is – songs rarely have one meaning. Especially, the one like this. It doesn’t have a specific pov. It just pushes you to think, and the perception highly depends on the person and what they are going through at the moment.

  18. Scooter313 says:

Antivax or cancel culture aside, these are the really troublesome lyrics in this song.
“Better pray for the soul of the citizen
Better pray that you’re not erased
On your knees, for the life you’re livin’
On your knees or you’ll be replaced
    Replaced”
This screams Great Replacement Theory which is a white nationalist belief that white Christian populations are being culturally and demographically replaced by brown immigrants, Jews, Muslims or atheists. This is the view of the manifesto of the shooter in Buffalo. That’s the part they should be explaining.

  19. Kelley says:

If you want to be vaxxed, get vaxxed. If you dont want to be vaxxed dont get vaxxed. Obviously if you get vaxxed, its to stop yourself from getting it.. not others. I actually got Covid from someone who was vaxxed and had the boosters. Use your brain, not your fear.

  20. Fan Forever says:

We should be thankful that we have the ability to freely listen to whatever kind of music we like. If you don’t like it, don’t listen. Another awesome album!!!! Thanks Shinedown!!!

  21. Tricia Modica DiMatteo says:

The whole album is fantastic! I quickly realized after the first time listening it was all about the pandemic and the current craziness the world is in. REFRESHING to see people get it! Made me an even bigger fan than before — if that is even possible. I can relate to EVERY single freaking song they wrote and play!
