“Softcore” by The Neighbourhood

The lyrics of The Neighbourhood’s “Softcore” logically read as if the addressee would be the vocalist’s significant other. That being said, it should be noted that the said individual can theoretically be another really close loved one in his life, such as maybe a child for instance.

And that is because the main point being put across by Jesse Rutherford is regret that he is not able to spend more time at home with this person, whom he loves wholly. And in his mind his extended absence at times, even if emotionally disturbing, is necessary, apparently in the name of feeding the fam.

So even though the profession of the vocalist is not specified, this piece comes off as one of those songs where a singer is speaking to one of the less-than-ideal aspects of being a successful professional musician. Apparently this less-than-ideal part of his profession is life on the road – something which separates him from the person he loves the most.

And in this case it can be deemed that the vocalist is truly suffering without the addressee, whose presence he metaphorically notes as having an edifying effect on his life. But again, he must venture out and do what he has to do as a man in this world.

That said, there really doesn’t seem to be any lyrical clue as to why this song is entitled “softcore”. Maybe said title is meant to allude to this being an emotionally vulnerable piece, one where Jesse is not afraid to shamelessly express his dependency on his lover.

I think the word “softcore” refers to the inside of the man. It reminds us that no matter how much of a man one is, he still has a soul and is vulnerable to pain when things break and he cannot be with the one he loves. And I comprehend the word as “soft core” rather than “softcore” 😀

in my opinion, i saw the song as someone with an attachment to their significant lover. even if theyre not good for eachother- they cant let go no matter how hard they try. “youre like the sun, you wake me up but you drain me out if i get too much”. it really shows as far as how attachments in relationships can take a toll on mental health in people.

  13. GiftedBurnoutSyndrome says:

Im glad I listen to them and found their sounds before it went viral. For this song as someone who struggles with attachment issues, it found a long back searching for a song to help orgainize how I was feeling at them time, so i searched on google ‘songs about letting go but you have attchement isssues and its afffecting your mental health.’ I have autism so i find it easier to cummicated with people through songs because I don’t always know explain my feelings songs help me do this and connect with people, I can explain so much more with a song than I can on my own. You know, and so just going back in time back when I was a giant low in my mental health because of my attachment, it really helped and it still does.
