“Yes” by LP

LP’s “Yes” is not overtly romantic. But considering that she refers to the addressee as “darling” and that most of the album it is featured on revolves around romantic themes, we can take it that the person she is singing to is a potential lover.

And basically, what she is encouraging this individual to do is say “yes” to their relationship. LP perceives this person as being a special someone who has brought hope into her life in a less-than-ideal environment (i.e. Los Angeles).

So now, it’s like the vocalist is shooting her shot, as in knowing what would make the story complete would be the addressee agreeing to take their relationship to the next level. And the way LP sees it, becoming romantically involved will edify both of their lives.

Or if we wanted to look at this discussion from an alternate angle, it wouldn’t be out of the way to presume that perhaps the addressee is one of those types of people who is afraid to fall in love. And therefore the vocalist has tasked herself with convincing this person to take that leap of faith, if you will.

The addressee has already greatly impacted the vocalist’s life. So she wants this individual to open up and likewise put her in a position where she can return the favor.

In Conclusion

And yes, it is possible that LP can be speaking to a platonic friendship, one in which the person she’s trying to get closer to is extremely shy. But logic leans more on the side of this being a budding romance, i.e. the type of relationship where a person (i.e. the addressee) really has something (emotional) to lose if things go astray.

And as far as the vocalist is involved, she and the addressee will make the perfect team against the unspecified dangers they both face, if only said individual is likewise willing to commit and take it there.

So in a roundabout way, this is actually one of those love songs that revolves around a you-gotta-be-in-it-to-win-it type of philosophy.
