“The Key to Life on Earth” by Declan McKenna

As its title loosely implies, the purpose of “The Key to Life on Earth” is to highlight human aspirations. And in an attempt to decipher the poetic metaphors used throughout, what Declan McKenna is doing isn’t so much along the lines of actually trying to interpret what “the key to life on earth” actually is. Rather it can be said that what he is expounding on is human trivialities, as in how we may have a tendency to focus on things that are not really important. For instance, in a couple parts of the song he comes off as if he is being critical of materialism.

He is also apparently speaking to the idea of people often being unjustly confrontational.  Moreover and conversely, there seems to be something like a romantic subplot operating throughout. And in that regard he appears to be idealizing the notion of innocent love, as in it being one of the highlights of existing on the earthly plane. But as alluded to earlier, there is a lot going on in this song. And ultimately the sentiment being relayed comes off as if Declan is being more critical of human interactions than vice versa.
