“To Be Loved By You” by Parker McCollum
“To Be Loved By You” was inspired by Parker McCollum’s relationship with one Hallie Ray Light, the woman he would become betrothed to in mid-2021. Said engagement came into reality about six months prior to this track.
And by the lyrical look of things, Parker had to go through the type of drama one sometimes endures before locking down that special someone. Or put differently, it was actually a previous stage in his relationship with Hallie upon which this song is based.
And most simply put, as implied by the title in context, the addressee comes off as being a difficult woman for the vocalist to understand. Or let’s say that he is well aware of the fact that she’s “always angry” with him. And when she’s in that sort of a mood, by the looks of things the addressee apparently excommunicates the vocalist, despite being in love with him.
What he doesn’t seem to get is why she’s upset with him in the first place. Such a disposition is made apparent by the line “maybe I’m right, maybe I’m wrong, finding out why shouldn’t take this long”. Or phrased differently, the vocalist doesn’t actually know what he did to offend the addressee. Thus her aforenoted mannerisms, under his perception, are making their relationship more challenging than it has to be.
But again, we know that in real life the story ends with the two of them getting engaged regardless. And such a sentiment actually comes through in the lyrics. That is to say that whereas the vocalist is clearly perturbed by the way the addressee behaves, the thought of actually ending their relationship doesn’t seem to cross his mind.
