“Two Chrome Necklaces!” by Autumn!

Autumn! is a hip-hop artist from Louisiana. Concerning the exclamation mark at the end of his stage name, apparently such spellings are part of his style. For example, “Two Chrome Necklaces!” is from an album he dropped on 22 August 2023 titled “Midnight Club”. And the titles of all 12 tracks on its playlist also end with an exclamation mark.

The Lyrics of “Two Chrome Necklaces!”

Sometimes it’s challenging to continually write analyses of rap songs, because the content tends to be monotonous, even across various artists from different localities. That is not to imply that Autumn! isn’t a talented rapper. To the contrary, the lyrics of this song are a bit refreshing, despite adhering to a genre which more or less demands conformity.

Or as we have pointed out numerous times in the past, the challenge of being a successful mainstream rapper isn’t to drop anything new or innovative. The overwhelming majority of the time, the content revolves around the same type of wealth-, sex- and money-based braggadocious content. So then the task then becomes relaying these well-worn ideas using different and/or ear-catching wording.

And again, Autumn! does succeed at that task. This is the first time we’ve taken a look at one of his songs, and it does appear as if he has A-list potential.

Thesis

The thesis basically centers on the vocalist celebrating his own success, i.e. the notions that he has dough, sleeps with various women and operates along the lines of a genuinely-heartless tough guy. But Autumn’s main source of boasting is indeed his wealth. He boasts not only for riches’ sake but also along the lines of it being able to afford him a high level of independence.

And somewhat relatedly, the rappers mentions “two Chrome necklaces” in the first verse for the dual purpose of alluding to his admirable cashflow as well as his business savvy.

Furthermore, various pricey-brands and celebrities are namedropped. At the end of the day, all of such lyricism basically alludes to Autumn being the man.

After all is said and done, he closes out the song with what reads like some genuine words of wisdom, advising other rappers to focus more on their “freedom” rather than the dough. Maybe Autumn should’ve followed that same advice in these lyrics, even if, as touted, he has already made it.

And yes, in the grand scheme of the music industry all genres are plagued with some degree of monotony. But rap holds a more notable place in that regard, considering that the standard most artists operate on is almost confrontationally self-centered.

“I ain’t even tryna sign for real, they ain’t got too much to offer
I asked the cashier for two cups, but this ain’t for no coffee
If she catch me cheatin’, she catchin’ a PJ, I don’t say sorry
Steal so much as a gram, get hit with the Drac’, but he sing like Aubrey
I already got two Chrome necklaces, you can’t double-cross me
I FaceTime the money, if you ain’t Ben Frank, then, please, don’t call me”
