“Watermelon Moonshine” by Lainey Wilson

“Moonshine” is not a particular type of alcohol per se but rather a term derived from the days of old that was used to refer to bootleg liquor of considerable alcoholic content produced and smuggled at night. It also so happens that watermelons, as fruity as they may be, can be used to make high-proof liquor, i.e. moonshine.

So what would be the beverage which plays such an important role in the past relationship between the vocalist and addressee partake.

But more to the point was the nature of the relationship they shared. As also illustrated, whom Lainey is singing about/to is her first love, dating back to her high school days. As further implied, the vocalist may have even lost her virginity to the addressee while they were inebriated on watermelon moonshine.

However, it’s not as if Wilson is trying to say that she was taken advantage of while in a drunken state. Instead, as relayed she was very much down for the cause. That is to say that the singer does look back and realize of course that she was a lot more naïve in her youth than she is now. But that noted, this relationship really had and continues to mean something to her.

As depicted, throughout its course she the other participant did liberally experiment with watermelon moonshine. They enjoyed this beverage so much so it would seem that she can’t think of said beverage without remember her first love, and vice versa.

Put differently, Wilson likening that romance to the “taste” of “watermelon moonshine” is another way of saying that it was both intoxicating and sweet. So accordingly, reminiscing on it seems to bring her a notable amount of joy.

“Drinkin’ watermelon moonshine
We cut the burn with a little lime
Parkin’ back in them kudzu vines
I was his and every bit of that boy was mine
Too young to know what love was
But we were learnin’ on a sweet buzz
There’s never nothin’ like the first time
And mine’s always gonna taste like
Watermelon moonshine”
