Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So” Lyrics Meaning

The way the story behind this song goes is that initially it had been completed musically, but lyrically Rivers Cuomo only had a singular phrase, “say it ain’t so”, to work with. So he needed narrative to flush the track out. This made him recall an incident from his high school years which likewise led him remembering to a prior event, i.e the divorce of his parents.

Said incident was when he came home one day and, as the song indicates, found ‘somebody’s Heine (i.e. Heineken) crowding his icebox’. In other words, he discovered a beer in the fridge. And the reason this made him think back to his estranged father is because basically his dad deserted the family due to being an alcoholic. But by this time his mom had already remarried. So seeing the beer in the fridge put the young Rivers under the impression that his stepdad would soon bounce also.

Two Ideas are presented in “Say It Isn’t So”

Basically, the singer is using this song to present two main ideas. First it can be said that he wants to air out the emotional baggage he was holding onto due to his dad leaving.  And in that regard, whereas he does lambaste him a bit, ultimately it seems that he has in fact forgiven him. Indeed during the bridge, Rivers uses the occasion to actually congratulate his dad on sobering up and ‘finding Jesus’.

But more to the point, this track can be viewed as Weezer’s treatise against alcoholism.  For instance, in the selfsame bridge the singer lets it be known, albeit metaphorical, that he is afraid of not only his stepfather being a drunkard akin to his dad but also he himself developing the same tendencies. But more generally, the band are attacking alcohol consumption itself. No, this isn’t a track preaching hardcore sobriety. Rather it’s putting forth an idea more like if you don’t take time, your alcohol consumption can end up ruining your life or that of someone you love.

“Say It Ain’t So” Facts

Geffen Records released this track on 13 July 1993. It was the third single from the band’s debut album, which itself is entitled “Weezer” (aka the “Blue Album”).

“The Blue Album” produced two other singles, namely:

“Say It Ain’t So” was exclusively penned by Weezer’s own Rivers Cuomo. And its production was done by a musician named Ric Ocasek who, on top of embarking on a solo career, was formerly a member of The Cars.

The visual to this track was directed by established music-video filmographer Sophie Muller. And it was actually filmed in the garage of Weezer member Matt Sharp.

“Say It Ain’t So” didn’t really have an overly-impressive chart showing, most-notably peaking at number 6 on the Canadian Singles Chart. It also managed to break the top 40 of the UK Singles Chart. However, it has proven to be a fan and critic favorite. For instance, in 2008 Rolling Stone placed it on their list of the “100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time”.
