Trivium’s “The Defiant” Lyrics Meaning

Interestingly enough, this song was inspired by the 2019 documentary “Surviving R. Kelly”, as well as the story of a likewise celebrity, Harvey Weinstein. Both R&B singer Kelly and powerful Hollywood executive Weinstein were brought to justice for their long-standing sexually-predatory ways. And the aspect of their tales and similar ones which serves as the premise to “The Defiant” is that fact that throughout their stories there have been a number of people who have turned a blind eye to their crimes. Indeed the title of this song serves as an ode to those who were “defiant”. These people were defiant enough to take the risk of confronting such influential individuals, calling them out for their mistreatment of their fellow man.

Or stated differently, the singer has found himself in a situation where he is also, hypothetically, associated with such a person. This person is a presented as an individual who, due to his riches, basically feels as if he is immune to persecution. But once again, the singer is not having it. Instead he is ‘standing in defiance of the ways’ of this individual. Or stated alternatively once again, despite this person’s standing he wants to see him pay for his wrongdoings.

Conclusion

So at the end of the day the lyrics are based on the concept of all-encompassing justice. As in no man, despite his wealth or popularity, will be able to outrun the long arm of the law. But at the same time to actually bring such people to justice requires those who are “defiant” enough to in fact challenge them.
