“Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr” by Trivium

Matt Heafy’s explanation of “Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr” is that it is based on a character who is a “villainous tyrant”. He is all-powerful, as well as ruthless. And his acts are so destructive that they have caused him to be hated by neighboring leaders. Yet despite all of this, his own citizens have love for him.

Now with that description in mind, it becomes a lot easier to understand the storyline behind this song. However, it does not explain from whose perspective – the tyrant’s, the enemies’, the citizens’ or even the martyr – they are respectively being relayed from.

Thus the first verse seems to be centered on someone meeting their untimely end. But who exactly that person is not clarified. The same goes for the chorus, though the second verse would obviously be from the perspective of one of the tyrant’s enemies. But as for the bridge, that particular passage, where it seems as if the vocalist is exacting vengeance, can be read from a number of the aforementioned characters’ unique perspectives.

Conclusion

So conclusively “Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr” isn’t actually about a martyr at all. Rather the aforementioned dictator is actually the song’s central character.

The whole song is centered on this ruthless tyrant who has both supporters and enemies.
