“Route 55” by McFly
To note, there are a number of roadways named Route 55 in the United States and also three, according to Wikipedia, which may be designated so in the United Kingdom, which is McFly’s homeland.
Owing to the above, it is not clear which one of them this song may be referring to. Nor is that the point really, because more important to the narrative at hand is the nature of the relationship between the vocalist and addressee.
The two of them are or were romantic interests, and harping back to the height of their romance, in 2005, the former was absolutely enamored with the latter. And that became most evident to him while the two of them were traversing the titular Route 55.
What differentiates this from a conventional love song though is that Tom also notes that his mom didn’t approve of homegirl. Indeed, her advice is that he should literally run away from her. And if this story is indeed set in 2005, as stated in the second verse, that would have been the year that Fletcher just turned 20 years old.
So all things considered, this reads like the case of a young man who fell in love with a lady who, based on his mom’s reaction, was likely less-than-ideal. But by the looks of things he was too smitten to follow that advice, opting to be with the apple of his eye rather than his mother.
“We can drive forever
In the sun together
We keep living in an endlеss summer
Ooh-ooh, woah-ooh”
