The lyrics of Alabama 3’s “Woke Up This Morning” were inspired by a real life tragedy which occurred in 1989. The tragedy in question centered around a British woman named Sara Thornton who murdered her violent and abusive husband.
Sara, who had been mistreated and abused by her husband for years, claimed she accidentally stabbed him to death following a heated argument. She was subsequently found guilty of murder. However, after appealing the verdict, a retrial saw her eventually being freed.

The members of Alabama 3 (including Rob Spragg and Jake Black) composed this song. According to Spragg, he was inspired to pen this song moments after hearing about Sara Thornton’s sad case. He later went on to state that the lyrics tell the tale of a woman “gets a gun” because she’s had enough of being mistreated.
