Azealia Banks’ “Black Madonna” Lyrics Meaning

Under traditional usage of the term, the Black Madonna actually refers to depictions of the Virgin Mary in which she is portrayed, succinctly put, as a Black person. Indeed the Pope himself is known to venerate such an icon. However, this is not what Azealia Banks is referring to in the title at all. Rather she is the titular “Black Madonna”. And within the context of the song, what this designation basically alludes to is the idea of she being a boss chick.

And she goes about proving such by depicting herself as a rich gangsta boo who is not only lyrically gifted but also uses her behind to derive money from men. Simply put, she is touting her ability to exploit the opposite gender using her sexuality. So despite the unusual name, thematically this track is in tune with the themes most other songs being released by female rappers during its era. And said themes center on these singers bragging about their wealth and being street-savvy and intimately irresistible.
