Doja Cat’s “Attention” Lyrics Meaning

“Attention”, which RCA Records and Kemosabe Records officially made public on 16 June 2023, is the first standard single Doja Cat has headlined since 2022’s “Vegas” from the Elvis soundtrack. This song is associated with the vocalist’s forthcoming studio album which, although yet to be titled as of the track’s release, has proven notable enough to concurrently have its own Wikipedia page.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Doja Cat's Attention at Lyrics.org.

“Attention” was just dropped yesterday, so we don’t know its chart history yet. However, its music video, as directed by the trendy Tanu Muino, has generated interest as it features the Doja, according to Rolling Stone, “nude and drenched in what appears to be blood” (as with the single’s cover art).

Also in terms of the song’s early reception, Lady Gaga showed it love, while the ever-controversial Azealia Banks rather proceeded to more or less diss Doja Cat. Besides the vocalist, the other credited writers of “Attention” are its producers, Y2K and Rogét Chahayed. And the teasing of this track dates back to a couple of months before its release.

Doja Cat's "Attention"

Lyrics of “Attention”

The way Doja Cats presents herself at times, you would think that she’s a super-confident go-getter. But in this song, the emcee rather goes about touting her “vulnerability” and ‘humbleness’. Or as inferred, the thesis sentiment this piece revolves around is Doja letting the world know that she truly is an artist, i.e. the type of musician who isn’t afraid to express and display what she feels.

And whereas she may be generally understood as a beneficiary of Nicki Minaj’s style, it isn’t such that she’s trying to bite off of anybody. Instead, this vocalist’s come-up is attributable to her being a talented musician who isn’t afraid to do her own thing, and who also happens to be sexually appealing. And as seemingly recognized by the nature of the title/chorus, she’s also an expert at generating headlines.

“(Love me) It needs, it seeks affection
(So sweet) Hungry, it fiends attention
(Hungry) It needs, it seeks affection
(Baby) Hungry, it fiends (Yeah)”

Or put otherwise, no matter how much someone may hate Doja, as it currently stands, she can be more or less counted as the top female hip-hop artist in the game.

With that in mind, the vocalist goes about dissing netizens who publicly attack her. What she implies is that their motive behind doing so is to compel her to make a response, thus boasting their online status, i.e. the fact that they were actually able to get an A-liter like Doja Cat to make a comment on their page. And she also mocks guys who criticize her sexual attractiveness, as if they could actually have her.
