“Backroad Therapy” by Alexandra Kay

The titular “backroad”, most simply put, is symbolic of the route that leads away from the addressee’s house. And the “therapy” stands for the vocalist resolving that she is no longer going to tolerate his toxic treatment. So when you combine those two ideas, what we get is Alexandra engaging in some “backroad therapy”.

What that means is that up until now, even though the addressee is presented as being both untruthful and physically abusive to her, it’s as if, once again using the simplest language possible, Kay is in love with him. So when dude calls, she responds. And even at times when he doesn’t she will go to see him under her own initiative, being addicted to his loving, as illustrated in the pre-chorus.

But on this particular morning, even though she does proceed to make her way towards his place, the vocalist decides to take matters more seriously and drive right past it. And when he calls sometime later to find out why she’s delaying, by then Alexandra is already “30 miles… out of town” with no intention of “turning around”

In other words, she has now really resolved to dump him. But what’s being equally implied throughout is that doing so is a very difficult goal for her to accomplish.

“Backroad Therapy” has brought some flashbacks of my younger years, when I fell in love with someone only to realize it wasn’t the kind of love I needed.

The song has also helped me to get out of the dark place that I was stuck in after an abusive relationship.

This song gave me relief. It helped me realize, I was NOT turning around. It helped me scream the pain at the windshield. It helped me realize that he was toxic and I was leaving town
