“Bad Girls” seems to boggle the minds of people as some believe it’s just a song about sex. However, others believe it’s about the oppression of women and how their liberation does not make them bad girls.

The official music video for M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls” was filmed in the Moroccan city of Quarzazate. It was purposely made to support the famous “Women to Drive Movement“. This was a campaign organized by women in Saudi Arabia to give women in the country the rights to drive vehicles. It should be noted that prior to June 2018, women living in Saudi Arabia were prohibited from driving motor vehicles.

The song was written by M.I.A. in collaboration with the following:

  • Marcella Araica
  • Nate ‘Danja’ Hills (who also exclusively handled all production duties)

The song is of the Hip hop genre and was released twice. In 2010, it was released on a mixtape named “Vicki Leekx” and on the album “Matangi” in 2012.

Before the single was even released, it was already making waves. Hence it came as no surprise to many when it became a hit. It was successful in many countries, including Britain and Belgium, reaching numbers 43 and 38, respectively.

The track was nominated for ‘Best Short Form Music Video ‘ in 2013 at the Grammy Awards but did not win.
