“Broken One” by RaeLynn

RaeLynn is a country singer from the city of Baytown, Texas who originally achieved public notoriety by proving semi-successful as a participant on The Voice in 2012. Around that same time she signed a deal with Republic Nashville though dropped her first EP, “Me” (2015), via Big Machine Records. And it is that project which features “God Made Girls” (2014), which stands as RaeLynn’s most-successful and signature song.

RaeLynn’s debut studio album, “WildHorse” (2017), was a number one hit on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. Its follow-up, 2021’s “Baytown”, didn’t fare nearly as well. But the songstress remains in the game and is reportedly on the verge of dropping a fresh album titled “Funny Girl”, of which “Broken One” is acting as an advance single.

FINDING LASTING LOVE AS A “BROKEN ONE”

The title of this song is actually a reference to the “broken” home which the vocalist grew up in. Or put otherwise, her parents divorced, and she has been negatively affected by that reality. In fact, it is pretty common knowledge that children of divorce, as they are sometimes called, have a tendency to themselves get divorced later in life.

Or as implied in this song, coming from such a background, as did the vocalist, makes one a less-than-ideal long-term romantic partner. And in this case, the addressee happens to be her significant other.

So basically, the thesis sentiment revolves around the singer acknowledging that the apple of her eye opted to marry her despite the fact that she is a child of divorce.

And it isn’t such that RaeLynn is devaluing herself for coming from a past that was troubled due to the actions of others. Rather, it reads more as if she fully understands why a person would not be compelled to choose a spouse from an unstable household. So furthermore, she considers it a blessing to have found a partner who, unlike herself, has parents who have managed to stay together.

So now , RaeLynn is able to look forward to her and addressee’s own child growing up in a two-parent household. That is to say that her daughter will not go through the traumatic experiences associated with divorce that she has, such as being compelled to ‘pick sides’ between two warring parents.

“Coulda seen my past
Took at look at my baggage
And packed yours up and run
But you saw a home
In a girl from a broken one”
