This song has an additional significance in that McGraw performed it on GMA (aka Good Morning America) on the aforenoted release date of the album.
THE LYRICS OF “HOLD ON TO IT”
This is a love song, in a manner of speaking. However it isn’t a conventional one, i.e. with the focus being on how much the vocalist values his significant other. Instead, “Hold On to It” sports an advisory tone. And the ultimate message of this piece reads along the lines of true love not being something to take for granted.
Or being blunt without beating around the bush, let’s say that what Tim is arguing is that we shouldn’t be willing to forsake a significant other over some b*llshit. As implied in the first verse, sometimes we, as romantic partners, can get so enraptured with “regret”, “pride” or a “grudge” that we refuse to forgive that special someone.
But as insinuated in the second verse, anger, disappointment or what have you isn’t such that they last forever. Therefore, what’s rather being supported throughout is the idea of staying committed to a loved one and keeping the bigger picture in mind, even at times you may not feel like doing so.
So the conclusive message of this piece is that “love is precious”, and therefore we should “hold on to it”. That instruction has a general applicability to it. But certain lines found in the second verse and chorus point to the notion that Tim is singing about romantic relationships in particular.
